Different Types of Dog Collars

Dog collars come in a variety of different materials and, depending on the type, serve different purposes.  The main use for dog collars is to keep control of the dog, especially for walking purposes.  The most common type of collar is the flat collar, which either uses a buckle or a quick-release mechanism to prevent the dog from being choked in emergency situations.  Slip collars are usually made of chain or nylon and include a ring at one end to allow for a loop to be made that goes around the dog’s neck.  A third type of collar is the head-halter, which is designed similarly to a horse halter.  Head-halters are designed to go around the back of the neck and over the muzzle.  With this type of collar, the dog-owner has more control over the dog than he/she would with a traditional dog collar.  Dog collars are also often fitted with identification tags, in case the dog gets lost and the owner needs to be notified.
