Parmesan Scalloped Potatoes and Yellow Corn

Last night my husband made me a delicious dinner. He searched for a couple of recipes on www.smittenkitchen.com and hit the jackpot! The main course was Parmesan Scalloped Potatoes. I love anything with fresh Parmesan and the bacon bits made it especially good. The corn was interesting because of the additions of red, white, and black pepper. Instead of boiling it he broiled it so it had a crispy top. and then sprinkled some cheddar on it. We tried some Viognier wine along with it for the first time. It had a pleasant but slightly odd, grassy flavor. For dessert he cheated and bought 2 lava cakes from Domino’s! They tasted a bit like chemical but were good nonetheless.

Across and Down

One of the things I really like to do in my spare time is work crossword puzzles. I find doing the puzzles an entertaining way to help keep my mind active and alert. Also, there are many loose ends in my every day activities. These are things that require incremental progress over extended periods of time. When I finish a crossword puzzle, I experience a satisfying sense of completion that is not available from these other tasks. I am not a crossword fanatic. I do not keep a stack of reference books nearby when I’m doing one, and I’m willing to admit there are some things I do not know and leave a puzzle unfinished. Instead, my approach is to find puzzles that match my skill level and that are fun to do.

“Mean girls” not just in movies

My favorite movie of all time is the movie mean girls starring Lindsey Lohan. I think this is a movie that everyone that’s gone through high school and survived can relate to in some way. Every school has an “in” group, the group of girls that every other girl envies. This movie is my favorite not because of the drama or the actors but because of the significance the movie has, the lessons that can be learned from the movie, and the everyday things that happen in high schools all over the country. I think the first significant event is when Cady (Lindsey Lohan) has a house party and hides her mom vase, lies to one of her friends, and changes who she is to fit in with the “in” group. During these scenes it shows how easy it is to fall into the wrong group and how easy it is to be affected by peer pressure. The next significant event is towards the end of the movie when they have the stage and all the senior girls are there, and they are all apologizing to each other for things they’ve done, or said to hurt someone else. I think that every teenage girl in America can relate to this movie someway and that’s why I absolutely love this movie.

My family fun time

This past weekend my sister Anita and her three children came to visit: T.j. 14, Madi 5, and baby Madelyn 8 months. They arrived on Saturday morning around 10:00am; unfortunately it was raining cats and dogs when they did. Prior to coming, I already had food and snacks readily available so we wouldn’t have to go back out in the weather. We came up with ideas of how we were going to spend our Saturday family filled fun. We already had our favorite foods such as: hamburgers and french fries, oreos and ice cold milk, and popcorn and drinks from the keg refrigerator. We started most of the day watching movies (District 9, G.I. Joe, Stardust, and Zoom), then we had a challenging and fun game of monopoly, leading to uno, and to end the night with Nintendo Wii game playing (Mario Carts, Madden Football 2009, and the games that come on the system, golf, boxing, bowling and tennis. We played until 4:00am. We had a blast! I woke up (Sunday) around 11:30am to fix breakfast for everyone (except the baby, she had a bottle and baby food). I fixed pancakes, turkey bacon and turkey sausage, scrambled eggs, and sliced grape fruit. My family left around 3:00pm that afternoon. We all had a fun filled blessed weekend.

My daschund Whiskey!

Whiskey is an adorable pedigree who has completed two years old. It is a treat to see him waiting for me with a wagging tail when I return from work. I clasp his leash on the bright red collar and off we go for a walk. Naughty Whiskey stops at every garbage pile he can find. He enjoys poking his big nose into the garbage pile. And how mad he gets when he sees other dogs out on their walk as well.  I have got him more than three sets of dog collars and leashes. I change them every week. The collar I like the most is one that resembles a chain with a little bell hanging from it. I love brushing and powdering him every other day. He thanks me by giving me a lick and a wag of his tail. I have become so attached to Whiskey that I do not know how I existed without him before.

My day was such an exciting adventure

So far, my day has been less productive than I would’ve liked. Every morning I resolve to really get things done in my spare time, but never seem to do it. Today, I went to my first class and did a sudoku instead of taking notes (justified by the fact that I’d already read the day’s reading). I then struggled through an accounting class and skipped my Lit class to come home. I had intended to get a little reading done for accounting but instead went to the store and bought air duster because I had seen a video online about how you can take dents out of your car with a hair dryer and air duster. It didn’t work. I came inside, dejected, and am now killing time online until work.

Dinner in Suburbia

Last night, my daughter and I shared a very simple salad of grape tomatoes, green peppers, and garlic and butter croutons drenched in Italian dressing and half a pot of Velveeta macaroni and cheese for dinner. My husband, who is either on the edge of or sitting right in a depression but refusing to admit it, declined my offer to cook him something more substantial and spent dinner time playing games on his cell phone. I’d guess that nights like that happen more often than not in homes across America these days, but it’s still unsettling to find them happening in my own.

Hobby Time

Most of us are so busy with our day to day activities that we rarely get time to indulge in things we love to do. Different people have different ideas of spending their free time like reading, walking, watching T.V.,swimming,painting etc. One of my favorite pastime is doing anything related with art. I love to pick up the brush and start painting. It makes me feel relaxed and refreshed. It helps me de-stress. The colors add a whole new dimension to life. I could apply henna on the hand, which is like tatoo painting. I love to sit on my verandah and enjoy nature. There are plenty of things to catchup with like reading and embroidery. It is good to have a hobby which will never let you get bored and lonely. It should help you grow as a person.
